Confessions Of A Business Owner

Confessions Of A Business Owner

I have a confession to make.  Now, I know (well, I think I know) that others feel the same way but still, I think my confession needs to be made.

Sometimes I’m not jumping with joy, shouting from the rooftops and “hustling for life” in my business.  Sometimes, I’m not all that motivated.  Sometimes, I just want to go out for coffee and wander around the shops rather than work on my next landing page or marketing strategy.

And that’s ok.  Today I realised that running a business has ups and downs, ebbs and flows, just like a river does.  Sometimes the current will be rushing, pulling every branch and log along with it and other times, it will get pushed up against rocks or rapids. Or even slow to almost no movement.  But the thing is, it is always moving. The speed isn’t important, the constant flow is what is important.

Generally, I give in during these times.  I know it is impossible to ignore my wandering eye and lack of concentration so instead of forcing myself to do a half-hearted job, I let myself have the day off.  The problem is, I am surrounded by these unbelievably preppy business coaches with their exhaustingly motivating quotes and stories and webinars.  Don’t get me wrong, I think these coaches are amazing at what they do and I enjoy (and need) the odd kick up the bum but I really do find them exhausting. Sometimes, I also feel like I’m failing. Or that I’m not cut out for business.

And then my lack of motivation passes. I’m back in the game with even more rigor than before! I guess my point is, don’t compare yourself to others.  Don’t compare your business success or even your business “energy” to those around you.  Sometimes you need a break to recharge.  No one can go at 110% indefinitely, at some point you need to listen to your body (and your heart) and allow yourself some time to let something else in.  Running a business is like being a parent; It’s all consuming and tiring.  But if you give yourself a night off once in a while, everything seems much rosier in the morning!
