Online Business Manager

What is an Online Business Manager?

I’ve been asked a lot lately about what is an Online Business Manager… Are they just a glorified Virtual Assistant? What’s the difference? Do I need one?

Like almost all things virtual, the definition is subjective but having started as a Virtual Assistant and now being an Online Business Manager, I’ll explain in real world scenarios below…

So what does an Online Business Manager do?

To put simply, clients bring the what and I bring the how. Once a business has gotten to a stage where managing the day to day takes more time than growing, they need an OBM. An OBM can take on many roles, for me, I tend to primarily look after the day to day running of things, team management and launch management.

Upon starting with a new client (and then ongoing each month), I hold strategy and planning sessions to put a plan in place to get them to their goals. It is then my responsibility to ensure that all tasks are completed on time and by the responsible parties. I keep in touch with all team members and suppliers so that nothing slips through the cracks and all timelines stay on track. It’s also important to note that I’m working for the best interest of the business – so I will also keep my clients accountable too. I ensure they know what they need to do and when they did to do it by – and then make sure it’s done!

And, a Virtual Assistant?

A Virtual Assistant on the other hand is for when you need routine or regular tasks completed. This may be the actual completion of those day to day tasks that the OBM is overseeing. Things such as website updating, customer service, social media scheduling, etc. Suggestions for procedural improvements are very welcomed but it’s not a focal point of their role, it’s more about getting the job done and doing it well.

In the corporate world a VA is similar to an office assistant, whereas the OBM is the office or department manager.

And OBM will be well connected in the business world and will either have a range of specialities on their team already, or a list of trusted suppliers that they can call on when needed. An OBM doesn’t need to be able to do everything (there are no unicorns in business!) but they can find the right person for the job.

Generally speaking, every business needs a virtual assistant but not every business needs an online business manager.

You can see in detail HERE how an Online Business Manager can help your business grow.
